The second temptation in this study is “false significance” or the temptation to believe “I am what I do.” The coronavirus has brought much of the world to a standstill, which means many of the activates we engage in to feel significant have stopped. If you’re an athlete, there’s no games to play, a singer, no concerts, an employee, no work to do. If your identity is tied to what you do, your world is likely being rocked right now. The invitation of Jesus is to find your significance and identity in him – not what you do!
Our truest identity and greatest source of strength rests in being God’s children whom He loves. The enemy of our souls uses three primary temptations to pull us away from abiding in the love of Christ. These temptations come up repeatedly in the biblical record, from the serpent’s lies to Eve in Genesis 3 to the Apostle John’s first letter to the church, which refers to the three “things that are in the world.” They show up most vividly, however, in the story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. These temptations are ways we grasp for things we were created to enjoy in our relationship with God, but lost in the fall: Security, Belonging, and Significance.
