“Following” is a term we use a lot these days. We talk about how many followers an online influencer has, following certain trends, and wanting to follow a developing news story. But one thing a disciple of Jesus must understand is what it means to follow Jesus. How do we know we are truly following Jesus? What does it look like? In this week’s message, we will look at Matthew 16 – a moment that happens between Jesus and the disciples that shows us exactly what it means to follow Jesus.
Deep down inside of us, everyone has this sense we’re called to something bigger – that we were made for a purpose greater than ourselves. Everyone feels this desire for their life to make a difference, because God put this desire inside each of us. We’re made in the image of God – which means we’re made in the image of greatness. We’re not meant to live lives of quiet desperation…but that’s what so many experience. When Christ came into the world, he did more than come to save sinners. Jesus came to teach us a way of life meant to save us from quiet desperation. The purpose Jesus called us to is summarized in the first encounter Jesus had in calling His disciples: “While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV)
