Jesus is a master teacher who often used paradox to reveal deep truth. One of Jesus’ most famous paradoxical sayings is that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Parents often quote this saying of Jesus to children at Christmas time. The truth of this saying goes far deeper than we might imagine. There is incredible blessing in generosity and great danger in being selfish. This sermon examines both the warning of stinginess and blessing of generosity.
Many of Jesus’ teachings contain seemingly contradictory ideas, such as the last shall be first, or you must lose your life to save it. We will examine four of these paradoxical teachings in this message series.
