God Can Do So Much With SO Little
by Heidi Berken
In November of 2002 I was a single mother of four, ages 6 through 15 and had been walking with Christ for about four years. The church I was attending at the time asked the women to open their homes for a “Christmas Gathering.” This involved hosting a brunch for women in my neighborhood in order to share the gospel. The ladies would be offered the opportunity to participate in a six week Bible study entitled, “Who is Jesus?”
I felt that I didn’t know enough to teach others about the Bible. I also wondered, “How can I possibly fit this in?”
The hand of the Lord was strong upon my heart to offer my home but I lacked confidence in myself. I felt that I didn’t know enough to teach others about the Bible. I also wondered, “How can I possibly fit this in?” God graciously provided a friend to help with the brunch and a supportive instructor to train me as a small group leader.
It’s been nine years and the original group, now an advanced study, has become two. Some of the core members agreed to split off to help mentor a “New Beginners Study” two years ago. Since the beginning at least 50 women have passed through leaving a lasting impression upon our hearts. They’ve been called from many areas of life: cub scouting, sports activities, local schools, church, family, neighbors and especially my job.
We’ve seen Christ’s redeeming love through everyday experiences. We’ve shared the birth of our children, marriage, addiction, abuse, physical illness and healing, divorce, unemployment, homelessness, raising children of all ages, military deployment of one of our members, the death of family, friends and even two of our own.
People are hungry for truth and need guidance that only God can provide. I’ve been richly blessed to share the transformation of many lives.
The calling to lead a small group is a simple one. It’s about being faithful and consistent in a world that is ever changing. People are hungry for truth and need guidance that only God can provide. I’ve been richly blessed to share the transformation of many lives.
Today, I’m a mother of five, ages 4 through 24. My full time job requires more responsibility and time but I’ve been blessed with a godly husband who shares in all aspects of managing the home and meeting the needs of our children. God has given me a tremendous hunger for His word and He inspires me through books, periodicals, conferences and DVD’s. My job requires me to drive at least 1,000 miles a month so I have plenty of time to absorb Christian radio ministries, cassettes and CD’s. Inevitably, what I read, hear or see is always relevant to the study for the week.
I know from personal experience that God provides all we need when He asks us to do His will. I choose to believe that with the little I have to offer Him, He can do much.
